Hui Jia

2009

Presented in the form of a postcard with an image of a traditional Chinese stone house that can be cut out and constructed, 1000 postcards were supposed to be distributed by Sanlun Yishu Collaborative Project, a mobile gallery in the Wangjing district in Beijing from Jan.-April 2009.

Participants were invited to take the postcard from the mobile gallery and construct a miniature Chinese stone house at home. In exchange for keeping the artwork, they are asked to share an anecdote about their favorite memory of home along with basic information such as name, place of birth, and how long they have been living in Beijing via email. This project seeks to engage audiences in a dialogue around urban living. I didn’t receive any response and have wondered about the failure of this work. Unfortunately, I recently discovered the organizers did not distribute my postcards and did not inform me of their decision to leave me out of the project.
