She Takes His Bed

1997

This installation examines the complex relationship between father and daughter. There are three elements, the first is an enlarged photograph of my father in his 20’s performing a kung-fu stunt. Off to one side are two short fictional letters stenciled on the wall. The third element is a video projected onto a bed of red pigment. The image is of a figure with Chinese text from a Confucius scripture which teaches filial piety and morality written on the body.

Chinese text from Confucius on filial piety for women written on my back. Movement caused by a whip striking the body.
